Data Approval Process - (Requester)

This page outlines the steps of the data authorization process for the Power BI Service.


  1. Each request for data access is fulfilled for a potential end user submitting a data authorization request. This request will specify what resources they are requesting access to, and the business need for such access.  
  2. Each request is routed to the appropriate "data owner".   This may be the Office of the Registrar, Office of Admissions, Graduate Division, or others depending on the App(s) that have been requested. 
    1. The App documentation will show who needs to approve user requests. 
    2. There may be the need for multiple approvals given the underlying data within an App.   
  3. The Data owner from that owning department is the sole determiner if the data access request is approved and may ask the end user for clarifying questions surrounding the use of the data.
  4. The Data owner may also require a user to complete specific training such as FERPA training prior to approving this request.
  5. The data owner will Approve or Deny the Request and inform IT of their decision.The data owner will also inform the requester of their decision and the reason for that decision.  
  6. If Approved
    1. The data owner will inform IT and request they be given access to the specific App. IT will add the users' account information to the appropriate security group enabling the access.  
    2. IT will inform the data owner and the end user that access has been granted and provide information that will help the user get started with the service.  
  7. If Denied, No Action is taken by IT to enable the access.
