Power BI Premium Capacity Settings

Capacity is at the heart of the Power BI Premium and Power BI Embedded offerings. It is a set of resources reserved for exclusive use by your organization. Having dedicated capacity enables you to publish dashboards, reports, and datasets to users throughout your organization without having to purchase per-user licenses for them. It also offers dependable, consistent performance for the content hosted in capacity.

Capacity settings are managed from the Power BI Admin Portal. Power BI Administrator permissions are required to view the Admin Portal. This article goes into detail on these settings.

The Ucsb-SIST Tenant currently has P1 Tier Premium Capacity.

The Capacity Portal Allows for the following configurations:

Capacity Admin Assignment: Current Capacity Admins are configured here by a Power BI Administrator. These users can edit settings, allocate virtual cores and workloads/resources within the capacity, manage assignment permissions and restart the capacity.

Capacity Assignment Permissions: A Capacity Admin can add users permissions for assigning a workspace to premium capacity. Currently the ucsb-sist environment allows all PRO users to have assignment permissions.

Worklads: Current ucsb-sist configuration is set at Power BI Defaults and no changes have been made. It is recommended to review the whitepaper to plan future capacity.

Monitoring Capacity: There are two ways to monitor the health of your capacity.

Within the portal itself, you can also monitor the health of the capacity. This will give an overview of the CPU and Memory Usage within the service.

Additionally, you can install the Power BI Premium Metrics App, which will go into greater detail into the health of the capacity. To learn more, please review this article: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/admin/service-premium-metrics-app
