Interdisciplinary Emphasis and Certificate Awarding

Interdisciplinary emphases and Certificate Programs are awarded when Faculty Directors inform the Graduate Division that a student has completed all the requirements for the emphasis or program. This section will explain the duties and expectations for each of the parties concerned, the normal processing procedure, and exception procedures:

  • Graduate Students

  • Faculty Directors or Staff Contacts

  • Graduate Division Academic Services Unit Staff (GDASU)

  • Office of the Registrar Staff

 

 

General Submission and Processing Information

  • Interdisciplinary Emphases

    • Emphasis Faculty Directors or Staff can notify the Graduate Division when a student has completed requirements, or GDASU staff will contact Emphasis Faculty Directors or Staff to request confirmation of completion.

    • Emphases are awarded in conjunction with a doctoral (or master’s if applicable) degree upon completion.

    • Please note that a student must first officially add an emphasis using the Change of Degree Status Petition (to view students enrolled in the emphasis, run the Emphasis Enrollment Summary report in GradPoint).

    • Interdisciplinary emphases do not appear on the diploma, but will appear on the transcript.

    • If a student added the emphasis, but does not complete the requirements, they must submit a Change of Degree Status Petition in order to drop the emphasis.

  • Certificate in College and University Teaching (CCUT)

    • Certificates are awarded in conjunction with a doctoral or MFA degree upon completion.

    • Please note that a student must first officially add the certificate using the Change of Degree Status Petition.

    • Certificates do not appear on the diploma, but will appear on the transcript.

    • Upon completion, students will receive an official UC-recognized certificate.

    • If a student added the certificate, but does not complete the requirements, they must submit a Change of Degree Status Petition in order to drop the certificate.

  • Graduate Program in Management Practice (GPMP)

    • Certificates may be awarded upon completion of the requirements (they do not need to be awarded in conjunction with master’s or doctoral degrees).

    • Please note that a student must first officially add the certificate using the Change of Degree Status Petition.

    • Certificates do not appear on the diploma, but will appear on the transcript.

    • Upon completion, students will receive an official UC-recognized certificate.

Expectations of Interdisciplinary Emphasis and Certificate Program Faculty Directors and Staff Contacts

  • Interdisciplinary Emphases

    • Emphasis Faculty Directors or Staff submit to the Graduate Division via email (gradacademics@graddiv.ucsb.edu) a completed and signed General Catalog emphasis check sheet after a student has completed all the emphasis requirements.

      • Indicate any course substitutions

      • Indicate the date/quarter & year the requirements were met

      • Must be signed (DocuSign, scanned signatures, email approvals all accepted) by the Faculty Director

  • Certificate in College and University Teaching (CCUT)

    • The Faculty Program Director should verify the student’s completion of Academic Senate Regulations (Senate reg 525).

    • The Faculty Program Director must send an email verification to the Graduate Division (gradacademics@graddiv.ucsb.edu) confirming a student’s completion.

  • Graduate Program in Management Practice (GPMP)

    • The Faculty Program Director should verify the student’s completion of Academic Senate Regulations (Senate reg 520).

    • The Faculty Program Director must submit to the Graduate Division via email (gradacademics@graddiv.ucsb.edu) a signed memo confirming the student completed the required coursework and internship.

      • Indicate any course substitutions

      • Indicate the quarter/year the requirements were met

      • DocuSign, scanned signatures, and email approvals are all accepted

Expectations of Graduate Division Academic Services Staff

  • Interdisciplinary Emphases

    • In the process of working on a student’s degree audit, GDASU staff will contact Emphasis Faculty Directors or Staff to request a completed emphasis check sheet if one has not already been received.

    • GDASU staff will verify the check sheet is completed and signed by the Faculty Program Director.

    • Upon completion of the full degree audit, the emphasis will be awarded in conjunction with the associated degree.

    • The emphasis check sheet will be archived and available in the GradPoint Documents Tab.

  • Certificate in College and University Teaching (CCUT)

    • In the process of working on a student’s degree audit, GDASU staff will email Faculty Program Directors to request confirmation of a student’s completion if a completion email has not already been received.

    • Upon completion of the full degree audit, the emphasis will be awarded in conjunction with the doctoral or MFA degree, and the student will receive an email verification.

    • The completion email from the Faculty Program Director will be archived and available in the GradPoint Documents Tab.

  • Graduate Program in Management Practice (GPMP)

    • GDASU staff initiates the degree check after receiving the formal memo from the Faculty Program Director.

    • Using the GMP degree check sheet/memo, GDASU staff verify that the student completed the required coursework and internship.

    • After confirming the requirements have been met, GDASU staff will award the certificate, and the student will receive an email verification. 

    • The completion memo from the Faculty Program Director will be archived and available in the GradPoint Documents Tab.

Exceptions

  • Interdisciplinary Emphases

    • Emphasis Faculty Directors or Staff should list any course substitutions on the emphasis check sheet (substitutions are at the discretion of the Faculty Director).

    • If courses are being counted toward more than 1 emphasis, both Faculty Directors must approve.

      • GDASU staff will contact both Directors for approval when this is noticed

  • Graduate Program in Management Practice (GPMP)

    • The Faculty Program Director can approve course substitutions as long as the substitution isn’t already being used to satisfy another degree or certificate requirement.

      • Substitutions must be upper-division (100) and/or graduate (200) level courses

      • Substitutions should be listed on the completion memo that is submitted to the Graduate Division

    • The Degrees Awarded Report on GradPoint Academics can be used to view the degrees awarded for a particular quarter(s) and can be filtered by Interdisciplinary Emphasis.

  • Certificate in College and University Teaching (CCUT)

    • The Degrees Awarded Report on GradPoint Academics can be used to view the degrees awarded for a particular quarter(s) and can be filtered by Objective and Major (CCG/INTST) to view CCUT certificates.

  • Graduate Program in Management Practice (GPMP)

    • The Degrees Awarded Report on GradPoint Academics can be used to view the degrees awarded for a particular quarter(s) and can be filtered by Objective and Major (CCG/INDIV) to view GPMP certificates.
