The Faculty Graduate Advisor’s Role with petitions
Graduate Advisors have signature authority to approve all Graduate Division petitions; Department Chairs also have signature authority as back-up.

The department supports and approves the student’s request
When an exception from the Graduate Division is needed
Registration in absentia requests beyond 3 quarters ; prior to completion of 3 academic quarters for terminal master degree students; doctoral students who have not advanced to candidacy. See petition for exception instructions: http://www.graddiv.ucsb.edu/academic/forms-petitions
For Leave of Absence requests beyond 3 quarters – contact Graduate Division if you get this request.
All Retroactive schedule adjustments- sign it if you approve of the request. It may not be approved by the Graduate Division, but we will contact you or the instructor if there are further questions.
The Faculty Graduate Advisor’s Role with degrees

For master’s degrees, Faculty Graduate Advisors or Department Chairs are expected to sign the master’s degree check sheets verifying the check sheets accurately reflect:
the student’s completion of all degree requirements
the dates milestones were met
the degree quarter
their approval of any noted exceptions (substitutions/waivers)
For doctoral degrees
Verify the student has met all departmental requirements to earn a doctoral degree
Verify that University requirements have been met
