Campuswide New Graduate Student Orientation & Grad Success Series

Annual orientation events for incoming graduate students hosted during the two weeks leading up to the start of Fall Quarter.

Grad Slam

Annual public speaking competition for the best 3-minute talk by a grad student. Typically hosted during Winter Quarter.

Beyond Academia

Annual career exploration conference highlighting career paths for PhDs outside of and alongside academia. Typically hosted during Spring Quarter.

Reorientation: From Candidacy to Completion

Annual half-day event for recent ABD students to connect them with their peers and reacquaint them with campus resources. Typically hosted in Fall Quarter

Individualized Professional Skills (IPS) Grant Program

Mini-grant program (awards up to $1,000) designed to help graduate students and postdoctoral scholars fill in the funding gaps for pursuing opportunities that support their professional development in a variety of career trajectories. Applications accepted year-round on a rolling basis.

Dissertation Write-In

Two sessions (June and September) of four-day writing workshops aimed at helping Ph.D. students in the middle stages of their dissertation process by providing intensive writing times, breakout sessions with a facilitator on typical dissertation issues, one-on-one consultations with the facilitator, and peer consultations.

Graduate Division Mentoring Awards

Annual competition to award graduate students who have distinguished themselves in the area of undergraduate research supervision. Departments may nominate up to two students every year. Typically hosted during Spring Quarter.

Lunch & Learn

Monthly informal seminar series featuring 15-minute talks by two graduate students – one from a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and one from a SHEF discipline (Social Science, Humanities, Education, and Fine Arts). Speakers are invited to communicate their topic in whatever way they feel most comfortable, welcoming anything from PowerPoint slides to fireside chats to hands-on demonstrations.
