Advancement to Candidacy Action

This workflow action is used to initiate the petition for your advancement to candidacy towards your doctoral degree.


You must meet both the UCSB Graduate Division requirements as well as your own departmental requirements for your doctoral program. Please coordinate with your Staff Graduate Advisor to confirm your eligibility before proceeding.

You may initiate this petition action ahead of your actual Qualifying Exam, but your department will not be able to approve your petition and route it for your committee’s approval until after that date has passed.

 

Log in to GradPoint Students

On the Petitions tab, click Start New Petition and choose Create Advancement to Candidacy.

The information for your specific degree objective and committee will display. Review the information and if any changes are needed, update your committee via the Committee Change action (also under Start New Petition, see above).

If the information is correct, enter your Qualifying Exam Date. As mentioned, you may enter an expected date in the future, but your department and your committee members will not be able to proceed with review and approval until after this date passes.

Click Check Requirements. The system will review University and Academic Senate Requirements to confirm that you are eligible for advancement. If each item has a green checkbox, you have met the University and Academic Senate Requirements.

If one of more boxes has a red X, then you have not met those requirements. You can continue to enter your information, but your advancement will not be completed until all requirements have been met. Please contact your department’s Staff Graduate Advisor with any questions or concerns regarding the requirements.

Confirm whether your doctoral program has a language requirement, and if so how it was completed for your degree.

Once all required information is entered, the Submit button will turn green to indicate the form is fully complete. Click the Submit button to finalize your Advancement to Candidacy nomination.

Following your submission, your nomination will proceed to your department’s Staff Graduate Advisor who will review and approve the information listed. Emails will then automatically be sent to your committee members to approve that you successfully completed your qualifying exam.

Once all members have confirmed and your Faculty Graduate Advisor has performed a final review, your advancement to candidacy will be officially processed by the Graduate Division.

At any point, you may check your petition status by clicking View Petition on the My Pending Petitions screen under the Petition Actions tab. This will show you the current step and related approver that needs to review and approve your petition before it can move forward.
