The DCB Graduate Program offers Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Master of Science (M.S.), and Master of Arts (M.A.) degrees. Upon admission, students are expected to pursue the Ph.D. program but may add or switch to the M.S. or M.A. programs at a later date if necessitated by individual circumstances.

Upon selection of a research advisor, students Students select one of the five traditional program areas and will communicate with their designated Faculty Area Advisor to progress towards degree completion. However, below, upon selection of a research advisor, but interdisciplinary research and exploration is common and strongly encouraged.

Degree Requirements
Degree The degree requirements for the graduate program programs linked below are intended to be flexible so it can be tailored as much as possible to the needs and interests of the students. Degree requirements may be are sometimes altered to accommodate for technical, academic, or administrative changes. However, students are held to the requirements in effect when they enter the DCB graduate program unless they obtain an approved exception request.

Substitutions and
WaiversExceptions to Program Requirements and Policies
Substitutions and exceptions to departmental requirements and policies may be requested via the Program Requirements Exception Form. Students should discuss program requirement substitution and waiver requests with the Staff Graduate Advisor prior to completing the petition.
The nature of the request will determine which approvals are required, but may include any or all of the following:
Course instructor (for especially in the case of course substitution requests)
Research advisor
Area advisor
Faculty graduate advisor
Department chair
Course Substitutions for Graduate Coursework
A maximum of 6 units can be waived from graduate coursework. The courses being used to substitute must have been taken during Master’s or Doctorate Programs. A transcript and syllabus will also be required for such requests.

Students granted a waiver or substitution of departmental requirements by faculty within the department are not exempt from any Graduate Division requirements. Students wishing to request an exception to Graduate Division requirements or policy should consult the Graduate Policies and Procedures Handbook and discuss their unique situation with the Staff Graduate Advisor.
