The Faculty Graduate Advisor’s Role with petitions

  • Graduate Advisors have signature authority to approve all Graduate Division petitions; Department Chairs also have signature authority as back-up.

  • You are signing to confirm that

    • The student is eligible

    • The action is appropriate

    • The department supports and approves the student’s request

  •  When an exception from the Graduate Division is needed

    • For in absentia requests beyond 3 quarters; requests prior to completion of 3 academic quarters for terminal master degree students; doctoral students who have not advanced to candidacy. See petition for exception instructions: http://www.graddiv.ucsb.edu/academic/forms-petitions

    • For Leave of Absence requests beyond 3 quarters – contact Graduate Division if you get this request.

    • All Retroactive schedule adjustments- sign it if you approve of the request. It may not be approved by the Graduate Division, but we will contact you or the instructor if there are further questions.
