ELPE

English Language Placement Exam

All incoming graduate students whose first language is not English must take the English Language Placement Examination (ELPE) at the beginning of their first quarter of enrollment. It is administered by EMS.

EMS

English for Multilingual Students

The EMS Program offers courses for undergraduate and international graduate students for whom English is not their first language. These courses help students develop English proficiency for academic and professional contexts.

The GPA (grade point average) is a numerical representation of a student’s academic record. In the US, the scale is usually 4.0. Never convert a student’s GPA to 4.0 - always leave it in the scale used by the institution they attended.

Graduate Record Examinations

The GRE (and/or GRE subject tests) is an exam that departments can choose to require. If a department does not specifically require the GRE, then none of their applicants will be able to provide it. It is administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service).
