World Higher Education Database (WHED)
Produced and maintained by the International Association of Universities (IAU), the World Higher Education Database (WHED) is a free resource used by international evaluators to determine whether international institutes of higher education are recognized and/or accredited. The WHED also lists the language(s) of instruction at most institutions.

Accreditation
To verify an institution’s accreditation status, search for it in WHED. Use the Quick Search field on the right side of the page to search for individual institutions or by country. All institutions with a current listing in the WHED are accredited. If you cannot locate an institution in the WHED please contact Graduate Division Admissions staff for assistance.

Language of Instruction
To determine the language of instruction at an institution, search for it in WHED. Use the Quick Search field on the right side of the page to search for individual institutions or by country. Once your search results appear, click on the institution name.
Additional details about the institution will be displayed. Scroll down the page to determine whether the language of instruction is provided. Please note that some institutions may not provide language(s) of instruction for publication in the database.
If you cannot locate an institution in the WHED or if the language of instruction cannot be verified using the WHED and/or the applicant’s transcripts, please contact Graduate Division Admissions staff for assistance.
Search Tips
To search for institutions using the WHED, copy the name of the institution from the application and paste it into the search field on the WHED website.
If no results (or limited results that do not match) appear, try the following:
Review the transcripts uploaded by the applicant. If the name of the institution on the transcript is different from the name reported in the Education History of the application, search using the name that appears on the transcripts (copy and paste or re-type the name, being careful to check for correct spelling).
Widen your search by typing in only part of the institution name (for example, try Birla Institute instead of Birla Institute of Technology and Science). Your search results will list all entries that include your search criteria, even if it is only a partial match.
Spell out short words that may be abbreviated in the institution name (e.g. “and” instead of “&”).
If your search returns a large number of results:
Narrow your search by including the full name of the institution. Include all words of the name (e.g. “the” or “and”). Place quotation marks around your search term(s).
Sort by country rather than institution. It may be easier to navigate to the correct university by first viewing all institutions located in the same country.
You can also increase the number of results per page (10, 20, 50, or 100):
If you find a partial match, but you’re not sure if it’s the same school as the one reported by your applicant:
Check other identifying information. Do the web site, address, and phone number or email match the information on the applicant’s transcripts? If so, it is probably the same school.
Be wary of spelling inconsistencies and address mismatches. Often, the school has simply changed their name or they are a large university with multiple locations, but this is not always the case.
