About Graduate Division Admissions
About Graduate Division Admissions
The University of California, Santa Barbara Graduate Division Admissions and Outreach staff is pleased to provide you with this manual, which offers a comprehensive overview of our admissions policies and processes. While we believe that this document is very thorough, you will most likely come across unique admissions situations that will require further advising from our staff. We welcome your inquiries and are available for training sessions throughout the year. To view the currently scheduled trainings, please visit Department Live Trainings - Admissions. For one-on-one questions or training sessions, you can book an appointment with the Graduate Admissions Analyst: Meetings with Graduate Admissions.
We would like to point out that the division of responsibilities between the Admissions and Outreach staff is designed to ensure the most efficient use of available resources. Please use the following contact page as a guide for routing application materials, forwarding emails and inquiries, and when contacting our office for questions or concerns: Who to Contact - GradDiv Admissions. We look forward to working with you in the upcoming year.
Commitment to Diversity
UCSB strives to achieve a graduate student population that is inclusive of all groups traditionally underrepresented: socioeconomic levels, physical abilities, ages, religions, national origins, and sexual orientations. Departments should take a holistic approach to admissions review. During the application process, we encourage departments to define excellence broadly and take into consideration:
Students who have overcome economic or social disadvantage in pursuing their academic objectives
Those who bring unique perspectives, research topics, or career interests that advance the University’s mission as well as excellence and diversity
Indicators beyond the GRE/GPA
Research or scholarly experience
Students who will “fit” well with the faculty’s research areas
Also, early identification of, and personal communication with, all competitive applicants is essential in attracting them to UCSB. Studies have shown that students who have had personal contact with faculty are much more likely to accept offers of admission; they are more likely to attend institutions where the faculty have been active in the recruitment process. Wherever possible, the Faculty Graduate Advisor and individual faculty are encouraged to take an active role and contact prospective students.
The Graduate Division is happy to provide training and workshops for individual departments who wish to better their outreach and recruitment goals.
