Types of Graduate Student Support

Fellowship Support

Funds are awarded on the basis of merit and promise of productive scholarship. Types of university awards and funding sources include:

  • Centrally administered fellowships

  • Department and campus gift and endowment funds

  • Departmental block grants (allocated to departments in the Fall of the prior year, e.g. 2020-21 block grant allocated in Fall 2019)

Fellowship funds could provide payment of any of the following:

  • Tuition and fees

  • University health insurance

  • Non-resident supplemental tuition

  • Professional Fees (for TMP, MEDS, and MESM)

  • Stipend

A fellowship is any payment to a student that is not salary or direct reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses such as travel costs. All fellowships must be processed and disbursed by the Graduate Division.

·       Central Fellowship Support

Important points to remember regarding fellowship processing:

  • Graduate Division is a clearinghouse for ALL graduate student fellowship support

    • Includes (a) Central Campus Fellowship, (b) Block Grant, (c) Department’s own Fellowship funds, (d) Extramural awards

    • Fellowship awards may cover Tuition, Fee, Health Insurance, Professional Fees, and Stipend

  • Recruitment Fellowships and Continuing Student Fellowship Competition

    • Recruitment Fellowship awardees chosen by Department.

    • Continuing Student Fellowship awardees are chosen by Faculty Review Committees. Reviewers are nominated by Department Chairs.

    • Departments will receive a call from the Graduate Dean for the upcoming recruitment cohort during the preceding Fall quarter (e.g. 2020-21 recruitment fellowship competition call during the Fall 2020 Quarter)

      • Recruitment Fellowship Nominations will be due in January

  • Central Fellowship schedule change requests can be made by Graduate Students with the support of Department Faculty Graduate Advisor

    • All fellowship schedule change requests are exceptional and are reviewed by the Dean

    • Students should consult with their department faculty graduate advisor before submitting a request

Extramural Funding

There are numerous federal and foundation fellowship opportunities for graduate students. All students should be encouraged to apply for extramural awards and to visit the Graduate Division's web site as well as the GradPost for information and links to various extramural funding sources.

Financial Aid Support (Need Based)

Funds are awarded on the basis of the student's financial need only (i.e., work-study and loan programs). Students apply for need-based aid through the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

Important points to remember:

  • Work study can be used toward TA appointments

  • Fellowship and Employment may reduce student need/aid eligibility. Fellowship (including stipend) and Fee Remission impact need based aid eligibility in the current year. Employment based pay impacts need based aid eligibility in the subsequent year.

Graduate Student Academic Appointments

Graduate students may also receive support through graduate student academic appointments. These positions include Graduate Student Researcher (GSR), Teaching Assistant (TA), Teaching Associate, Readers and Remedial Tutors.
