Purpose of the Handbook

The 2022-2023 Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (DCB) Graduate Program Handbook is designed to be used in conjunction with Graduate Division’s Website for detailed requirements, policies, and procedures specific to the University and to the DCB Graduate Program. Every attempt has been made to ensure that the information in this handbook is current and correct. Please notify the Staff Graduate Advisor if any information is unclear or missing. It is each student’s responsibility to confirm the deadlines, requirements, and paperwork that apply to their degree program at each step in the graduate school process.

Mission Statement

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UC Santa Barbara is dedicated to performing cutting edge chemical and biochemical research in an environmentally and ethically sound manner, in service to the county of Santa Barbara, the state of California, and the world. We are committed to addressing the grand challenges that humanity faces in the 21st century and believe that chemistry and biochemistry are at the forefront of this endeavor.  In accord with this mission we strive towards excellence in undergraduate, graduate, and outreach education, and we will instill in our graduates the skills and drive necessary to meet these challenges.
