Graduate Coursework

Tip

18.0 units of core academic coursework with a letter grade of B or better, in each course, is required. A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 must be maintained.

  • Students meet with their Faculty Area Advisor during New Grad Training to plan course selection

  • Most students take all of their courses in their first year

  • This requirement must be met before advancing to candidacy

Research Area and Advisor Selection

Tip

Students should submit the Petition to Select Primary Research Advisor to the Staff Graduate Program Advisor to complete this requirement.

  • Participation in at least three (3) research groups is required before selecting a Primary Research Advisor

  • A “rotation” is defined by the DCB as any one of the following:

    • Attendance at a minimum of 3 group meetings

    • A multi-week lab rotation including collaboration on a project

    • A series of interviews and lab tours with at least 3 students and/or postdocs from the same research group

    • Or other forms of active exploration as agreed upon by the student and PI

  • In order to remain in good academic standing, students are required to formally join a research group by the end of their second year

    • Must be after December 1st of their first year

    • Must be after rotations are completed (even if a student has worked for and been paid by a professor during the preceding summer)

Teaching Requirement

Tip

Students must teach for a minimum of three (3) quarters, typically all done during their first year.

  • Students are required to enroll in Chemistry 501A-B-C or 502A-B-C, as appropriate, during each term in which they are employed as Teaching Assistants

  • Satisfactory evaluation of your teaching performance is required to remain in good standing as a graduate student

First Year Chair’s Meeting

Tip

The Staff Graduate Program Advisor will contact students regarding this meeting.

  • All new students must meet with the Department Chair individually at the end of winter or spring quarter

  • You will be asked to prepare or collect:

    • Updated Resume/CV

    • Questionnaire

    • Statement from your Advisor

Establishing a Thesis Committee

Tip

Students should notify the Staff and Faculty Graduate Program Advisors of their committee makeup. The Faculty Graduate Program Advisor will sign off on your committee.

  • By the end of the first year, students should choose their thesis committee

  • Committees comprise of three faculty members in addition to your research advisor:

    • Research Advisor

    • Faculty Member from your general area of research

    • Faculty Member from your general area of research

    • Faculty Member outside of your general area of research

  • The student will meet with all committee members at least once a year to discuss progress, receive input and feedback, and discuss any concerns they might have
